The Long Hours - Lion by Nambroth

The Long Hours - Lion

Nambroth

Inspired by a very handsome fellow at the Buffalo zoo. Though he was obviously a captive lion, I was reminded of the wild ones, where the daylight hours are the "long" ones for them.

Did you use any medium(s) for this? c:

Not this one! Just straight paint. :)

Hm.. it looks so thin and scratchy. Just rough brushes then?

No, I use smooth brushes. The paint straight out of the tube doesn't have a lot of 'body'. It also changes textures as it dries.

If I were using a heavy body acrylic it would surely look different. :)

Oh it would, that's for sure.. more brush texture for one and streakiness (unless you have a good scanner or use very well-diffused daylight)

My dragon uses acrylics too (densely pigmented heavy-body and nice mediums to save money) and gets super smooth effects, as does Tim Gagnon, who both are about the only two I frequently see work ^-^; ..I've also seen Nim's latest and they too are smooth. But yeah.. I'm an oil painter, I don't know all that much about acrylics, so it's all a bit odd to me — the bastards never agreed with me and I never managed to convince them! xD

I use Golden's acrylics with a very good pigment load, and Chroma Interactives which also have a good pigment load but are a bit creamier. I have used them in a very smooth application before but with personal work I tend to get a bit more impressionistic or loose.

I'd love to oil paint someday! I still fight with my acrylics sometimes.

"Buffalo zoo!" I thought, "OH right!" I keep forgetting we live remarkably close lol - I adore the variation in the textures and colors you achieved - especially in the mane!

This is well detailed, and it looks stunning! It's just really expressive!
    Good job.
