Step by step: Naga prince by Meru-san

Step by step: Naga prince

This isn't a tutorial or anything, I just thought it might be interesting for some of you to see how I work on things. I know I enjoy stuff like that, sooo...Yeah.

There might be some shitty grammar ahead. Just saying.

  1. This is what my rough sketches look like. You can barely tell what it is, but the shape is there.

  2. Then I break my character down into geometrical shapes.

  3. Final sketch. I add hair and a rough background on different layers just so it'll be easier to change if I don't like it but don't want to erase and redraw everything.

  4. Trying some colours just to see if it'll look good.

  5. Inking is fun. I didn't like his arms so I changed them. I also got tired of the background.

  6. On a new layer below my lines I carefully fill the entire character with white.

  7. On top of the white base layer I add a new layer, make sure the "Layer clip" box is checked (This will keep everything inside the lines so I won't have to worry about it.) and start adding his colours.
Then I did the same to the pillows.

  8. Add another layer on top, check "Layer clip" and set it to multiply. Fill it with some colour. I chose purple.

  9. After that I grab the eraser tool and start deleting shadows where I want the light to be.

  10. I thought something was missing, so I added a bit of warmth by adding another layer on top of it all ("layer clip" selected!), filled it with a bright orange and set it to Screen. Lower the opacity until it looks good.

And now I'm happy with it. I could go on and add more shine and details, but I don't feel like doing that today.

I like it, it's very nice.
Bit of a shame you didn't include the background with the doorway and the curtains, even in flat colour it would have framed the figure nicely.

Yeah, I liked it a lot as a sketch. When I inked it it just looked wrong, though.
I still like the idea, so I might add a new background. Maybe. You know, I can SAY I'll do it, but...Eh, usually I end up not touching a painting for months after that. |D

Hee, I know exactly what you mean. I usually end up applying rejected ideas to new drawings.
