Valeur is the protector spirit of a particular clan of humans going under the same name. These humans are a slightly miserly, gold-grubbing bunch, and for good reason - their protector is the ghost of a very old dragon, furious over death and a now-stolen hoard. In return for certain benefits, Valeur demands a hefty tax of gold, which is set on fire and sent into the afterlife, as a sacrifice to the dragon's spirit hoard.

No one really sees the gold after it's set aflame, so they're not quite sure what happens to it. There is no trace left of melted metal, so maybe it really does enter the afterlife! Some Valeur clan members like to assume it's recycled back into the physical world, either naturally regrowing somehow, or through the gold coins showing up here and there through some kind of fate. It wouldn't make sense that it's all just gone!
