Defender of the City by Megan Bryar

Defender of the City

Megan Bryar

For Ciara, being Queen is no easy task. The foxes of Cearnach City demand much of their monarchs, and they expect that any king or queen who wishes to be worthy of their throne will be not only a competent ruler and diplomat, but an accomplished warrior as well. It was Ciara's paternal ancestors who founded the city five hundred years ago, and who set the precedent for all their descendants to follow by conquering their realm in blood and fire. Ciara, herself, has no taste for combat, and she has spent most of her life trying to bring peace to the island, but the safety of her people is more important than her personal desires, and if she must be Queen then she is determined to the best ruler they have ever had.

A peek into Ciara's future. Or at least a possible future.

That sword is gotta be awkward to swing.. fortunately it's just a ceremonial weapon, isn't it?

I love this image, especially her expression.

Well, yes and no. It's her father's sword, which he actually did use in combat on those rare occasions when he was allowed to fight. But Ciara, being half swift fox, is considerably smaller than her father was. In fact, at 4'9" she's smaller than any other adult fox on her home island. So it is just a ceremonial sword for her, and if she must defend herself she prefers daggers or short swords. She just keeps it with her because she looks so good holding it.

Sorry to hit you with such a lengthy reply, but I'm glad you like it. I've always thought that Foxxian got the mood just right on this one, and I do love her expression, too. She's not someone you want to cross!

Hmm.. I'd be worried using that sword, myself. Quillons curved up are a forearm/elbow injury waiting to happen.

I do agree that it looks impressive, though!
