The Animal I have Become chapter 2 by lycanthrochick (critique requested)

I woke up the next morning, human, completely naked, and with next to no memory of the night before. I slowly got up, feeling slightly dazed, and wondered where I was. Eventually I realised I was in my room, but it looked like it had been completely trashed. Books were ripped, as was the bed clothes. It looked like someone had come in and wrecked it. I got myself ready for college and slowly made my way downstairs. My father saw me and smiled, ‘Morning Rebecca.’

‘Morning dad,’ I replied.

‘Did you hear anything unusual last night?’ He asked me

‘Such as...?’

‘Growling, howling, that sort of thing.’

I shook my head, ‘No. I didn’t here anything last night.’

‘Wow. You must be a heavy sleeper.’

‘I guess. Well, I’m off to collage now.’

‘You sure? You haven’t been well the last few days.’

‘I’m fine, dad. I’m not going to let a little dog bite stop me.’ I waved goodbye and went to the bus stop in my usual way, except this time my sense of smell caught everything around me. It was so bizarre.

When I got to college, I saw Emma and said hi to her. When she saw me she hugged me tightly, ‘Oh Becky. I thought something terrible happened.’

‘It sort of did,’ I hugged back awkwardly.

‘So what happened?’

‘I’m not sure. I think I was attacked by some kind of dog.’ I showed her the scar. She jumped back a bit, then regained her composure and looked at it, ‘Wow. Must’ve been one heck of a dog.’

‘Yeah. But I’m fine now,’ I smiled.

‘Okay. Say, I’ve been invited to a party tonight. Wanna come?’

I nodded, ‘Sure. What’s the worst that can happen?’

In hindsight I probably shouldn’t have said that.

That evening I met Emma at a night club. I had made myself up so I looked good, but hopefully without attracting too much attention. Emma smiled, ‘You ready?’

‘Ready as I’ll ever be,’ I replied. We went inside. Emma spent most of her time talking to other people, whereas I sat in the corner holding a glass of fruit juice. Just then a guy walked up to me. He was huge (well, from my point of view), with short brown hair, and no shirt, showing his well toned six-pack, plus a few scars. He smiled at me, ‘Would you care to dance?’

I looked up at him, ‘Oh, no thanks. I’m a lousy dancer.’

He smiled took my hand, ‘Don’t be scared.’

I put down my drink and stood up, looking into his blue eyes. He was so handsome and polite, I was lost in his gaze.

When the song finished I went to sit back down and took a sip of my drink, still watching the boy I danced with. My drink tasted different, and I wondered what was wrong with it. My throat started to burn, and I realised my drink must have been spiked. I ran outside, gasping for air, when someone came up behind me. I spun around and saw it was Damien, a complete asshole who’s tried to ‘get it on’ with me since we met at school.

‘Hey babe. Wanna make out?’ he asked with a stupid grin on his face. I could smell the alcohol on his breath.

‘I’ve told you many times before, Damien. I wouldn’t ‘make out’ with you if you were the last guy on this planet.’

He put his arms around me, ‘Aww, common love, don’t play hard to get.’

I pushed him away, ‘I’m not playing, Damien. Leave me alone.’

He didn’t listen to me, and started to attempt to undo my jeans. I was so angry I slapped him in the face, leaving four small cuts on his cheeks. He looked at me angrily, then lunged at me with one of his hands around my neck, holding me against a wall. I tried to fight him off but he was too strong. He was holding my neck so tightly I couldn’t scream for help, and could hardly breathe either. I silently prayed for someone to come, when suddenly I felt a stabbing pain in my stomach. My skin tingled and I spotted tiny hairs growing on my hands from the corner of my eye. Damien must have noticed something unusual, because he let go of me and took a few steps back.

I stared at my hands as fur grew on them and my nails yet again sharpened into claws. I groaned as I felt the tip of my spine extend into a tail. My body expanded and grew, causing my clothes to shred. My shoes also got shredded by my feet morphing into paws. Finally, my face morphed and stretched into a canine muzzle. The last thing I remembered before blacking out again was the look of pure terror on Damien’s face...

I woke up the next morning (I think it was the next morning) in a strange room. It looked like someone’s living room. It looked quite classy, with polished wood everywhere and plenty of stuffed animals (real ones; not cuddly toys) decorating the room. I slowly sat up, groaning and trying to remember what happened last night. A man wearing nothing but a pair of jeans walked into the room. I instantly recognised him as the guy I danced with last night, ‘Oh. Hello.’

‘Hey. You okay?’

‘Considering what happened last night, I guess I’m okay.’

‘Do you remember what happened last night?’

I began to recall what happened, starting with us dancing, but I stopped when I reached the part with Damien, starting to panic. The boy wrapped his arms around me and rubbed my back, ‘There, there. It’s okay’

I looked at him and half smiled, ‘So... what’s your name?’

‘Oh yeah, I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Tony. What’s your name?’

‘Rebecca,’ I said simply.

‘It’s a pleasure to meet you Rebecca,’ He said with a smile. I felt my cheeks get warm as I blushed and I looked down, feeling slightly embarrassed. He held my chin, forcing me to look into his eyes. Was this true love? I wasn’t sure. I looked at my the clock and gasped, ‘Is that the time?’

He nodded, ‘It is. You need to get home?’

I nodded quietly and stood up. He stood up too and put his arm around my waist, ‘Let’s get you home.’

We quietly walked home together. I’m not sure what it was, but there was something I liked about Tony. It might’ve been the fragrance he was wearing, or his personality. Whatever it was, I liked him, and I felt safe with him. I just hoped he wasn’t one of those guys who appeared nice to lure girls into a false sense of security.

‘So, how was last night?’ He asked me, finally breaking the silence.

‘Umm...’ I never really thought about it, ‘... It was okay...’

‘You can’t remember much can you?’

‘No. How did you know?’

‘People tend to black out and not remember much for the first few transformations.’

I stared at him, shocked. How did he know? ‘Transformations? What are you talking about?’

‘You don’t have to play dumb with me. I know you’re a werewolf.’

I gasped and stepped back, then looked around to see if anyone was around to hear. Luckily there wasn’t, ‘Okay, I admit it.’ I looked down with a mix of embarrassment and shame. He put his hand under my chin and lifted my head, ‘It’s nothing to be ashamed of. I’m a werewolf too.’

My eyes went wide with a mix of different emotions and I stared at him, ‘You... oh my god...’

He nodded, ‘From the moment I saw you I knew.’

I nodded and looked at him, ‘What’s it like? Being a wolf?’

‘It’s both wonderful and horrible at the same time. Although hopefully one day you’ll learn to control when you want to change.’

‘Really? Could I not change at all?’

He shook his head, ‘Unfortunately that’s not an option. Some werewolves have died trying to stop themselves transforming. As much as you dislike it, you’ll have to give in to your inner wolf every now and then.’

I sighed, ‘Okay. My home’s this way.’ I started walking and he followed me, ‘Do you live with anyone?’

‘I live with both of my parents.’

‘Okay. I’ll have to tell them why you were at my place.’

I spun around, ‘What? You mean...?’

He gently held my shoulder, ‘I won’t tell them you’re a werewolf if you don’t want me to. I’ll think of something believable. Which one’s your house?’

I pointed, ‘That one.’ He walked up to the door and knocked on it. A few moments later it slowly opened and my father glared out, ‘Yes?’

Tony cleared his throat, ‘Hello sir. My name’s Tony. Your daughter passed out last night so I decided to take of her until she could get home.’

My father glared at him, ‘Why did she pass out?’

My mother put a hand on his shoulder, ‘Don’t blame it on him. You know she’s been having problems recently.’ I hid my face with embarrassment.

My father grunted and walked into the living room. My mother put her arm around me and smiled at Tony, ‘Thank you so much for keeping our daughter safe.’

‘No problem ma’am.’

Okay, I think that’s it for now. I’ll write some more later
