Moon Tree by Lunarius

Moon Tree

Lunarius

The moon was masked out first, and then I applied a thin wash of Ultramarine. I lifted off some of it to make it mottled, then once all of that had dried I went about masking out the branches and bole of the tree and some of the stars. Other stars came after subsequent washes, so they aren't all quite the same colour. After the previous night's work had dried (the WIP shot here) I peeled off the masking for the branches, some of the trunk and a few stars. 'Leaves' were dry-brushed on over top of the branches and lifted out again in some places. The trunk I left entirely alone, as with the moon, though some paint had crept behind the tape and had to be scrubbed.

This was painted on Arches Aquarelle, 140lb/300gm cold pressed paper with Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolours.
I used:
• Ultramarine
• Dioxazine Violet
• Intense/Phthalo Blue
• Prussian Blue
• Payne's Grey

I also used a Fineline Masquepen for the tree.

The original painting is for sale, and measures at 7.9x7.9 inches. Please send me a note if you're interested; otherwise prints are available.
