The left-handed casting stance would leave his right hand free to hold a weapon, or to steady his aim as seen here. Being a hot blue-white color, this energy blast is meant to travel fast and accurately and penetrate its target rather than exploding on contact like the average energy bomb.

As for technical/artistic stuff, it was fun to play with blurs and lighting and gradients to get this to look just right, like something out of Dragonball Z or something.
