After all these years, Topher has finally received a bit of character development--when I originally designed him a few years back, he was another one of those one-off characters I had no real idea what to do with, but I soon decided he'd be a chill, dopey, friendly slacker type.

For a while he was the fat tanuki Taro's friend and roommate, but fairly recently, I decided he should be Dominika's boyfriend. It seems like a good match, as Topher's personality is very much "Dominika On Low Battery", and the two can be chaotic idiots together. Topher, being pretty chill, respects that Dominika and Nico are very close and need to spend time together on their own, and is often more than happy to include Nico in his outings with Dominika, but the fact that Topher and Dominika need some time together alone would become the driving force behind Nico finally getting out of the house and making friends beyond his sister.

While it would be extremely out of character for Dominika to just tell Nico to leave, or for Nico to take his sister calmly explaining that she still cares deeply about him but sometimes needs time alone with Topher as some sort of slight or attack, Nico would probably not take this development too well... there's also the fact that I think Nico would also have some interest in Topher as a romantic partner, which is something that I have yet to decide Topher's feelings on--while in the past I have hinted that Topher may have had interest in Taro, meaning it's not too out there for Topher to be bisexual, the fact that he's dating Dominika would probably make any sort of awkward advances from her twin brother that much more awkward for everyone.

At any rate, Topher has a lot on his mind, regardless of what point in his story this picture would be from. Worries about whether or not to try going to college like his buddy Taro, or just find the exact sort of dead-end low-paying job he'd wind up in without a degree or the debt, worries about the state of the world, finances, and general adulthood, or later on, worries about his girlfriend when her infectious happiness seems to be faltering or when her brother seems to feel like the only person he's ever actually been close to is starting to slip away from him.

Of course, there may also be the lingering existential dread that comes from sensing that his artist, his creator, the only one that can or will ever be able to develop his story or even bother to draw him, might not be drawing much longer... I wonder how fictional characters deal with that sort of thing, I know I don't take the knowledge that I live on a planet that is not only dying but being actively destroyed all that well...
