Decade-Later Redraw: Sidney and Charley by LordDominic

Decade-Later Redraw: Sidney and Charley

LordDominic

A redraw of one of my favorite drawings from 2013.

Ever since I first designed Sidney, I had him and Charley as friends. Attorney and small-time petty criminal that can't keep out of trouble? They would see each other all the time! However, as time went on, I considered that they might be more than just friends.

Sidney was also (probably) my first canon gay character, although I originally decided he was gay more as a joke than anything (because skunk) back in 2006. As time went on, though, like many of my random ideas and shitposts, I decided that there was actually some potential for interesting characterization and went with it.

Sidney has always been interested in Charley, but not quite sure how to express that although he tests the waters on occasion, and Charley has always been oblivious to Sidney's subtle hints. However, when Charley gets evicted from his apartment, Sidney offers to take him in as a roommate, and from there they gradually become more comfortable with each other until Sidney finally works up the courage to make his move...

This all has a happy ending, of course--Sidney and Charley were actually my first gay couple, although I don't have much art of them together (this has more to do with me preferring to draw single characters, though, than any aversion to chubby gay mustelids cuddling romantically).

Pride Month seemed like a good time to redraw this, and 10 years later is quite a bit of artistic growth--shift from traditional to digital, and years of practice, and becoming more confident in my art (including the weird shit I enjoy drawing sometimes that maybe I shouldn't be posting even though it's super tame by furry art standards), characterization, and characters. I included both the original sketch and the 2023 redraw here, as it's sorta interesting to see them side-by-side. The traditional art has a certain charm to it and I may have to do some proper sketching again at some point...

We're also coming up on the 20-year anniversary of some of my oldest anthro art, only time will tell if I can be motivated to do 20-year-later redraws of the old doodles that became Jack and Melissa, Chance Whitefang, and many more...

Finished May 28 2023.
