Jeroban Automecha by LordDominic

Jeroban Automecha

LordDominic

One thing I sort of enjoy drawing, but don't really draw all that often, is robots. I was dealing with some serious burn-out a while back, but wanted to be productive still, so I decided to take a shot at robots again.

With a few advanced space-faring races and factions in my galaxy it seemed like a good excuse to take a bit of a break from drawing anthro stuff and draw some of the machines that would work alongside them.

These are two models of Jeroban automechs ("automecha" is an alternative plural form), designed to be versatile and capable of handling a variety of tasks. They typically come factory-standard with a few basic interface ports and expansion bays, with the intent that the end user will fit them with the desired tools and equipment. A variety of tools and attachments exist, ranging from basic manipulator arms, to heavy equipment such as forklifts, bulldozers and cranes that the automech can dock in and interface with to automate construction and industrial work when no workers are available (or to work in conjunction with an organic operator for increased precision and efficiency), and various weaponry for use by military and security force units. Some vehicles, including some spacecraft, also come with automech docking ports enabling them to operate as "pilots", although this is uncommon.

The Jeroban inhabit several desert worlds, and are fond of building massive supercities, so any machinery they construct needs to be able to handle itself in either environment--or preferably both. The reddish drone on the left is a model that would typically see use in an industrial setting (although some do see use outside of the cities, typically on farms where they can serve a variety of roles ranging from "small automated tractor" to sentry duty or as assistants to mechanics), while the more robust and advanced unit on the right is typically used by the Cygnian Federation military and various farming, industrial, mining and construction operations. Some units also come with specialized wheels to enable them to operate on the outside of large spacecraft to make repairs and perform general maintenance duties.

However, as the Jeroban aren't too trusting of advanced AI and have a galaxy-wide population exceeding 30 billion, meaning there is generally no shortage of workers available, most of their automecha is fairly primitive compared to what is standard for science fiction, and they are not as common as one might expect them to be. They are typically used alongside living beings, rather than being replacements for them, and are regarded as invaluable tools for working in hazardous environments.

For a more advanced type of Jeroban automech, here is "Bulky Bot", a design from 2018. I tried to capture the same overall aesthetic with these units, especially with the face plate and its multiple sensor "eyes"

(I am considering the idea of having a chassis similar to this, replacing the torso/head section with a port that these wheeled automechs can dock in and connect with an interface to take control of the bot, that could be kinda cool.)

The term "automech" (a combination of "autonomous" and "machine") is going to be my universe's equivalent to the term "droid", which as it turns out, is a registered trademark. I'm offering "automech" as an alternative term, and if anyone else wants to use the term, feel free.
