Jelba by LordDominic

Jelba

While updating/revising/further developing some of my alien races and creatures, I was reminded of this critter design...

While I never did do much with this design, it's clear that it has some relation to the Jeroban.

Meet the Jelba. A mid-sized rodent creature native to the Jeroban homeworld and introduced (accidentally or intentionally) to every world they have colonized, this omnivorous creature shares common ancestry with the Jeroban race. They do very well in hot desert climates, eating all manner of plant matter, seeds, bugs, and whatever other edible things they can find. While sometimes regarded as a pest by Jeroban farmers, the Jelba has also found its way into many of their homes as a companion animal, its amusing antics and curious, friendly and energetic nature making it an entertaining and loving pet. They can be trained to follow some simple verbal commands, and their own vocalizations consist of various squeaks and chirps and whistles.
Their body is typically about 12 inches/30cm long, not counting the ears, while the tail is usually about 1.5x the length of the body.

I updated the design slightly from the old version, to be more in line with the Jeroban and their typical coloration, forgoing the random greenish bits (which might still be part of the design in a way, as older art of this creature depicted it often on a world other than its own--perhaps parts of the fur react differently to the different wavelengths of light radiated by different stars, making the green patches visible under certain lighting conditions, and the patches are typically only visible to other Jelba under the light conditions of their homeworld).

Both "Jelba" and "Gelba" will be acceptable names for this species, pronounced either with a J or G sound, and capitalization is not necessary.
