Rat Chimeras can't make everything that they need. They often need to venture from their base camps and settlements to trade with non-Rats. Some are not above stealing, but most limit themselves to scavenging items from towns, houses, and docks along the Hamuam/New African border that were abandoned during The Great War.

Rats became a highly prized and extremely valuable commodity after Bio Dynamics (the company that originally made them) went bankrupt and was bought up by Gene Corp (the New African government owned business that makes the Bat Chimera species), who then stopped all production of Rats. Rats are now so valuable that Rat Catching is fast becoming a profession in its own right.

The threat of Rat Catchers has led to the Rats arming themselves as best they can. It also led, over time, to the Rats perfecting their own unique style of escape and evasion techniques which they use to overcome the Rat Catchers, and to a style of hit and run warfare that they use to wear down the Rat Catchers.
