Animats tend to have privileged, if precarious, lives. Most are bought by nobles and rich citizens as status symbols, and as fashions and tastes change over time, a once highly prized Animat can find themselves sidelined or discarded as their owners keep up with the newest species trends. Some are even reduced to taking day jobs (the equivalent of our real world night jobs). While this would could be soul destroying for an Architect (the catch all term for a human on Lantrei), Animats, like Chimeras, tend to be very comfortable with their bodies. This is probably due to all the tests they have to go through before they are released to their buyers. That said, the smiles of a day worker often mask sadness and a desire to be wanted again.
