The Bat Chimeras of planet Lantrei have undergone some major and minor changes over the years.

The first generation Bat Chimeras, or Bats as they are simply called, were a single species with no discernible subspecies, and they had what were somewhat euphemistically known as 'safe guards' to help control their behaviors. Later generations were made without safeguards as frequent use of the safeguards often biochemical cascades in the Bats.

By the time the third generation of Chimeras were made and/or born, there were three subspecies which were the result of selective breeding The Latrans Chimeras had earth hued fur, which their human creators thought fitting for their 'worker model'. The Marder Chimeras had dark, stone colored fur, and were most often shades of grey. These were the 'paramilitary' model, made for security work. The Vulpes Chimeras have a unique two toned fur pattern consisting of a 'base' coat and a contrasting 'pattern' coat on top. They were made for entertainment and pleasure.

Although there are hundreds of thousands of Bats on Lantrei, their human creators and owners seldom see them as dangerous. Their small size makes it easy for people to forget that they are part wolf as well as bat, and that they are incredibly strong for their size and weight. And as most are kept in tightly controlled Chimera colonies doing menial work, they are often out of sight and out of mind. This is a blessing as well as a curse for their species.
