Exveemon VS Growlmon! Battle of the DigiGiants!

VeeGrowmon

It was a beautiful afternoon in the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo, Japan. The skies were clear with a fantastic view of Mt. Fuji in the distance, the streets were full of the hustle and bustle of everyday traffic, and the citizens were going about their usual business. Everything was set for another productive day in the heart of Japan. All was normal...

Until "it" happened.

It was as if it came out of nowhere. Suddenly, the surrounding area rumbled not unlike the worst earthquakes Japan has experienced. Skyscrapers were falling onto the streets, causing all the traffic to come to a complete and sudden stop. Alarms were blaring through the air along with all the smoke billowing from the debris. The whole of Tokyo went into a state of emergency as every organization from the Japan Self-Defense Force to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police rushed to evacuate the population from the city. All those alarms were silenced when an unholy roar traveled across the land. It was then that the terrified citizens realized that what they were experiencing was not an earthquake at all.

It was "them."

A blood-red behemoth with black, runic markings all over its body; A beast blue as the sky possessing the wings of an angel; the height and mass of each rivaled the tallest skyscrapers in Japan. As far as everyone could tell, they were engaged in a vicious battle to the death unlike anything observed on this Earth. They went after each other with relentless bloodlust. The impact of each blow could be heard for miles. And yet even after receiving an attack that would completely demolish any man-made structure in an instant, one of the colossal combatants would continue its assault, apparently no worse for wear. They both seemed evenly matched… but whether one of them would eventually triumph over the other mattered not to all of Tokyo's population retreating below.

Some of the citizens were running in fear, some were frozen in sheer awe, but all were in disbelief. The whole situation resembled something straight out of a Godzilla movie. But what everyone couldn't understand was why these monsters were here. It was simple enough to understand that Godzilla was created as a warning to the dangers of nuclear proliferation, but the monsters that were currently destroying the city literally appeared out of nowhere with no explanation whatsoever. How was this possible? And why? It all seemed to be foreshadowing something else entirely - something that could not result from anything existing in the natural world.

As the towering titans were continuing their struggle among the city ruins, they were closing in on a familiar sight to Japanese residents: the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, perhaps the most recognizable building in Tokyo next to the Tokyo Tower. What people were noticing, however, is that amid the volleys of devastating haymaker punches, furious roundhouse kicks, scorching fireballs that resembled meteors, and even building-vaporizing lasers, the TMGB remained completely intact. It was as if the building held some sort of significance to these creatures. Was it a sacred object to them? Could it be their point of origin? The answers were elusive as the battle raged and the evacuation carried on.

One citizen, however, was starting to put the pieces together: the gargantuan monsters, the fact that the TMGB was still standing, and the fact that the building was a commonly-seen place in Japanese science fiction, Godzilla included. As the person was traveling past one of the many markets that Tokyo, he came across an advertisement that had to do with a popular animation that was airing in Japan and other parts of the world. Having watched the series on television before, when he realized the correlation between the ad and what was happening behind him, he couldn't help but laugh in spite of the situation and say these words before running for safety:

"Digimon. Digital Monsters. Digimon are the champions."

I figured I'd try my hand at a little storytelling to go along with this image. Let me know if you like it. I know it may sound a little cheesy.

Sektujai: is an amazing artist when it comes to this theme. His artwork made me realize just how well comic books and giant monsters go together. I've seen some great comics and image sequences posted here that revolve around the macro subject. But, at least from what I've seen, it's not very often that they vividly capture the appeal of the comics you see at the bookstore with their action-packed panels and detailed but clean art style. Their aren't a lot of mainstream comics that involve giant monsters to at least a somewhat significant degree, so to see comic book artists drawing them for fans of the genre is quite a treat.

This piece really captures the ferocity of the battle with the two combatants ready to throw-down like their lives depended on it (and it does). To me, Digimon in general seem perfect for the concept of Godzilla-sized mayhem across the landscape. They have that instinct for battle that characters from a certain other series don't seen to exhibit as often. I'm also fond of the somewhat natural look of the picture thanks to all of the trees surrounding the area. It's not that common in harrowing situations like this picture portrays.

Simply put, something about a creature (humanoid of otherwise) being larger than most of its surroundings - regardless of what it ends up doing with its size - is just awe-inspiring to me.
