"We met a human today! He was uncharacteristically friendly, for a human. Usually it's 'Kobolds! Run!', or 'Come quick, bring your bow!', or 'Those fucking lizards are stealing our chickens again!', but this one was different. He didn't threaten us or anything - I don't even think he had a weapon. That was cause for caution... in our experience, humans who walk around without weapons are usually sorcerers or something, and... well, we don't have a good track record with sorcerers...

Anyhow! This human, he just wanted to talk to us. Weird, I know! He even offered to pay us for the time, can you believe that? Human coins usually aren't much use to us - we'd never even seen coins until we came to the surface - but occasionally we'll find someone who has something we want and doesn't seem to mind that we're kobolds... and they always want coins in return, so it's good to have some on hand. It's convenient, really - they're useless to keep around, and they're heavy, too."

"A human approached us today... said he was writing a book, or a report, or.. something, and wanted to know how three kobolds came to be living by ourselves, on the surface. I didn't trust him. Humans've never done us any favors... quite the opposite... but Pik took to him immediately. I think he liked the attention... I wanted to run him off, but Pik insisted on hearing him out. We told him a little bit about us, and he seemed really interested. Said he wanted to hear everything. Said he wanted to write it down. All I could think about was how long this all would take, and how much I wanted to take his gold and leave his body for the wolves to find, but... well, that's not how it worked out..."

"I thought he'd never leave. He must've been here for hours, listening, writing... just when I thought he was near to finished, he'd ask another question, and Pik would jump right in with a long-winded answer. I've never seen him so talkative before. I don't know what got into him. I have to admit, though... as much of a bore as it was watching that human taking notes... pages upon pages of notes... in a way, it was nice to have an excuse to think about home again. Our old home, that is. This is our home, now, but it wasn't always like this... I don't talk about it to the others, but... I miss our old city. The food, the smells, the other kobolds... the blessed darkness... Hearing Pik chatter on about it, I think maybe he misses it, too..."
