"Kobolds are proud, independent creatures. We'd sooner die than be taken prisoner - not that many would bother keeping kobolds captive, anyway. We'll fight to our last breath for our freedom, and to defend what little is ours. We band together, because there's strength in numbers - as many, we thrive; as one, we die. We value community above all else - the survival of our tribe is dependent on it. What belongs to one of us, belongs to all.

Some of these things, we are taught. Some of these things are instinct - we just know them. Some of these things, we learn for ourselves, but they are all truths.

There is one truth, however, for which we will abandon our warrens, give up our freedom, our pride and our lives: dragons. We're taught of dragons from the moment we hatch - draconic creatures of untold power, splendor, grace... our distant relatives, perhaps... and we dream of them. Some kobolds, we're told, serve dragons - there is no shame in this, and none would think of faulting them for it. On the contrary, they're the lucky ones, for despite being bound to their dragons, mind, body and spirit, they are the ones among us who are truly the closest to being free.

To be beholden to a dragon means freedom from hunger, freedom from danger, freedom from fear. To have a patron so powerful, so fantastic, so great...
