V-24 study [OLD]

Finally, the redesign of the Ascendancy's LMG is done :D

The V-24 is a hybrid, gauss-assisted, light machine gun chambered in the standard 7.62x54mmR cartridge. It is the current standard issue LMG of the Ascendancy military, the CAFSA.

Development of the weapon began in the early days of the Ascendancy; the leaders of the CAFSA knew that to have an effective fighting force they required a weapon that was capable of sustained fire, so they pressed Citadel Command about the importance of having a new, similar weapon system as opposed to what they currently had which were left overs from the Strax Defense Force or left behind by the Union forces following their retreat.

Being trusted with the development of the weapons for the Ascendancy's strike craft, the newly formed Valkorak design bureau was also given this task. Engineers from Vakorak's secondary division took notes from the older weapons of the same type they had on hand for the LMG project but eventually moved away from them after refinement proved to be not as effective as they had originally hoped, instead opting for an original design.

The program for the light machine gun was slow, plagued by reliability issues. As such, the weapon was not ready by the time the Grand General called for Operation Steel Sun to begin, regulating the forces of the CAFSA to use the old SDF weapons they had in their inventory.

While the Ascendancy proved to be victorious in Operation Steel Sun, it brought to light major shortcomings in the older equipment they were utilizing. Citadel Command put pressure on the Valkorak design bureau to finish the light machine gun before the next invasion operation, this gave Valkorak three years to come up with a prototype that fixed the issues they were having.

To fix the feeding reliability, Valkorak took inspiration from the feeding system of the Union's L-12 light machine gun. Instead of being entirely built into the frame of the weapon itself, the feed assist was built into the magazine of the weapon, being attached to the receiver just as the operator would a normal belt link of rounds. With this technology, the major feeding problems were mostly solved, the rest being addressed by minor adjustments to the recoil system.

After a year of internal trials and tweaking, the revised prototype was presented to Citadel Command - only this time, the Grand General himself was present.

With the previous reliability issues still in the minds of CAFSA high command, the weapon underwent exhaustive trials at the Kyram Proving Grounds on Strax. It was only after succeeding in these harsh tests that the V-24 was adopted into service as the standard squad-level support weapon, entering full production on Hellion V.

The V-24 saw limited service during Operation Sundown, before fully replacing any old LMGs by the time Operation Moonlight began.
