Addendum: MUCH later, I finally looked it up to confirm my memory and, as per usual, it was faulty. The Pidgey in that episode could not, in fact, breathe in space. I'd only seen a couple brief clips of that episode, not the whole thing, and it was a LONG time ago, so that's probably why I got the wrong impression.
