Wren (Boldness, Humility)
Wren whistles deep in the thicket. Wrens are small and would be rather inconspicuous if not for their loud, often complex songs. Wrens have a large repertoire of calls they often sing at high volume which may have linked the wren to the trait of boldness. It is male wrens who perform these vocalizations, likely to attract a mate or scare off other potential suitors. Primarily insectivores, wrens will occasionally eat plant matter and may even eat small animals. Wrens are typically drab in colour, perhaps linking it to the trait of humility. Unlike other birds they often hold their tails upright. Living in a wide range of habitats, wrens prefer temperate weather. Most species remain as residents in places where the weather is warm year round. In terms of behaviour the wren varies from species to species. Some lead extremely solitary, even secretive lives, while others engage in social behaviour. Wrens tend to have large clutch sizes up to 8 eggs; though around 4 is more typical. This ability to procreate may help it to repopulate due to predation, weather disruptions, and food shortages.

Perhaps the most well-known story about wren is how it became king of the birds. This is a story told in Celtic, Germanic, and Greek cultures. The birds wanted to see who would be king and so agreed that whoever could fly the highest would be crowned king. The eagle (sometimes hawk) out flew all the other birds but was ultimately beaten when, at the last moment, wren, who had hidden in eagle's plumage, burst out and announced himself as king. The wren had a key role in Druidic lore as one of the birds that helped bring fire from the heavens, thus explaining the short tail. This was with the aid of robin and lark. On December 26 Druids would participate in wren ‘hunting’, a quest to find a wren. This was more about finding inner wisdom than actually spotting the bird. Wrens were sacred to the god Taranis, a thunder god who protected them with lightning. In Native American lore wren was often associated with meekness.

When wren whistles at you in a reading it can bring a message of bold humility. Is it time for bold action, or humble tones? Are you using the skills of others to bolster your own claims? How easily can you balance the need to be heard with a humble small presence? Wren isn’t linked to any particular element, though air, and perhaps wood may be a good starting point; as well as the sun card.

Astrology- (Celtic Jun 10- Jul 7) This Celtic sign has an optimistic demeanour. Linked to the Oak tree this sign is also known as The Stabilizer. Wren people are easily self-motivated and determined. Those born under this sign need to watch their money and may have to watch what they say. Responsible Wren has good moral integrity and do well working or volunteering in their communities. Remaining calm in stormy weather Wren will happily sing sweet melodies to their friends and family.
