Heron (Honesty, Self-Reflection)
Heron darts it's head into the water. Herons (sometimes called egrets) are solitary hunters that wade through the water to find their prey. The s-shape neck of a heron will straighten quickly, like a powerful spring. Heron uses its long dagger-like bill to spear its prey. The constant dipping of its head into water; a metaphor for emotions, may have linked heron with the trait of self-reflection. Heron also keeps it's head tucked close to its body when flying. This position of having its head near its heart may have also led to the belief that heron was emblematic of self-reflection. Using its wings as a sort of canopy against glare from the water, heron is an accomplished hunter. Some species of heron even use luring techniques, dropping seeds or insects into the water, to attract fish. Heron's long legs and long neck allow it to wade into deeper waters than other wading birds, giving it a distinct advantage. Male herons build nests near the water, in trees or in reed beds to attract female mates.

In Native American myth, heron is a symbol of wisdom and patience. A Native American story tells that heron raced with hummingbird and whoever won would have dominion over water. The story is a version of the tortoise and hare myth, where hummingbird gets distracted and heron uses tenacity to win. In Greece the heron was a messenger of Athena, making it a symbol of wisdom. In Ancient Egypt the call of a heron was that of the sacred benu-bird and announced the beginning of time in Egyptian creation mythos. Heron may have also been the basis for the phoenix myth, because of its influence in Greek and Egyptian cultures. Celtic myth saw the heron as gifted with psychic power and esoteric secrets; sometimes even seen as a guardian at the gateway of life and death.

When heron has darted into a reading it may be time for some self-reflection. Are you willing to dive into the depths of your own emotions? Are you reflecting in a way that is self-obsessed or overly critical? Are you willing to stand on your own; rise from defeat and embrace your potential? Heron is linked with the elements of water, air, and earth.

Astrology- (Western Aquarius Jan 20- Feb 18) This western sign is often the most unorthodox and can be seen as a little eccentric. Despite being known as the water bearer, Aquarius is an air sign that enjoys its freedom. Honest Heron is surprisingly effective at getting what it wants and is loyal and intelligent. Aquarius needs to be careful about having their head in the clouds and can be prone to laziness. Those born under this sign are gregarious and make excellent humanitarians. Artistic and poetic Aquarius makes friendships naturally; their accepting attitude and lust for joy make them easy to get along with.
