Marianne really loves fancy cakes. Like the types that are covered in frosting, have swirls and dots or fruit or chocolate, multi-layered or cupcake, she'll pretty much go right for it and gobble it up. Ironically enough, while the kicking and squirming of live prey doesn't make her sick too often, gorging on sweets will definitely put her out of commission for a while to recover.

So, armed with this secret rumored weakness, sometimes ships will have a cake held in reserve, in order to try and appease the captain. And sometimes it'll be enough for her to be distracted so that some of them can escape. (Though most of the time, it's hardly enough to appease her, or hardly the quality she feels she deserves. Or Jane points out the people trying to go for the life rafts.) And any of the two port towns she visits knows that when they catch sight of her flag, fire up the ovens, they've got a gluttonous bat to appease so she doesn't get bored at port and start picking on/nibbling on the locals.

In this case? Well, someone was prepared and pretty much bribed their way out of an attack completely! It’s a gigantic cake, but such is the cost of sailing the open seas when hungry pirates are around.
