About half a year ago, when I was just aware of the furry fandom, I found anthropomorphic animals to be odd. I thought all you had to do to design such a character was take the human form, then replace the human head with that of your favorite animal, add fur/scales/feathers where appropriate, and before you know it, instant furry! That's why when I came up with Jed, my one-and-only scalesona, it made sense for me to just make him big and feral.

But then I realized some of the benefits of an anthro form. It makes roleplaying as Jed so much easier because with a more human body, you make yourself so much more relatable whilst still keeping that mystical edge of fantasy. No longer would big boy here have to pillage the countryside and pick up whatever unsuspecting sheep or cattle stray from the herd. He'll also be able to walk around without making sure his tail won't swing towards a passerby and knock the air right out of their gut. Finally, he'll be able to sit on his new, shiny throne without squishing it under his weight, or worse, have it pop like a balloon.

Those are pretty good reasons, but what really had me reconsider my strictly-feral ways was that as I saw more talented, hardworking artists, I could see the thought that was put into experimenting with human and animal qualities. For example, on one end, there's characters that are all human, but with cat ears and a tail, while there's all-out monsters that can only communicate through growls and hisses as they act on instinct. The most popular anthros that you see in the furry fandom happen to fall somewhere inbetween these two ends. What's very exciting about looking at well-done anthro art is that there's a whole spectrum of these things!

So here's Jed, an anthropomorphic dragon. He now has opposable thumbs, and is now able to wear most men's underwear.
