Even since I was a kid I had an idea about time compression, about visiting distant places in a simulation or in your head, where you could spend months or years doing whatever you wanted with the people you like. Discussing tactics in a fast-paced space battle, that's one use I found for it. Psych rehab was another nice use.
But one thing I have to admit: I'm glad I live in a time when movies and books about time compression come to fruition.
A friend once told me: "Don't you feel sometimes like you have less and less time in your workday, like everything accelerates? You come home from work totally exhausted, and you did even less work than you did a year before." I felt that in my bones.
I talked about that with my dad, and he offered me a theory: the universe itself was going faster; or we are slowing down. He raised that theory to a full-fledged conspiracy, all with reptilian space cruisers with temporal warp gates and the Illuminati possessing a haarps-like machine to control the flow of time on a certain area. Oh, what fun time we had...
But we laughed just to keep ourselves from the cold truth, that we were running out of time, all the time. As Nick Cave in the "20.000 Days On Earth" said: "Our days are numbered."
