The Dark World of Helheim by Guei-Girl

The Dark World of Helheim

Helheim is a place in Alerfa that represents the two afterlives. Helheim is the home of the devil gods, goddesses and elemental beings of darkness.

Helheim is called the dark world for its constantly dark skies and cold, frigid atmosphere in the majority of the land. However, despite the darkness, life flourishes in this strange world. There are glowing plants, flowers and insects in this strange world, to illuminate the way for mortal beings sent here.

Many centuries ago, around the common era times of human years, the Twilight of the Gods has taken place. Many gods and goddesses have perished, Yggrasil, the former world tree has burned down, disasters and plagues took place and all mortal life forms on these ruined worlds lost all their memories and knowledge of the worlds as well as their past before the tragic event.

Even though the Twilight of the Gods has ended many centuries and eons ago, the damage has been done. The surviving gods left Helheim and went back to Godheim, to start their lives a new.

Race of demons and devils:

Devil Deity

Devil Deities are the highest ranking and denizens of Helheim. Their looks range from humanoid from beastly. The Devil deities are what happens when a dark elemental being's soul reaches the maximux apex of evolution.

There are many Devil Deities that rule over the realms of Helheim. Each Devil deity, just like their counterparts in Godheim, differ from personality to personality. Some are calm, others are fierce. Not one devil deity is a like.

Succubus

The dark half of the Valkyries of Godheim. Succubi are known to be rather seductive and are rather loose female beings. For the most part, Succubi are known to be attractive, but unattractive ones have been known to exist as well.

Most notable of the Succubus clan is Lilith Belmonte and Juvela “Jewel” Belmonte.

Incubus

The male counterpart to the Succubus clan, and the dark halves of the Einheriar of Godheim. Like their female counterparts, Incubi are very lust filled beings who really get around. Looks vary from creature to creature, but the personalities are still pretty wild and frisky, despite their outer appearances.

Patchwork demon/devil

Patchwork demons are a very unique race of demons. They are usually humanoid looking, and their skin and hair come in a variety of colors and shades. However, what separates them from human souls is that they can take their bodies a part and re-assemble themselves again. They can even claim the limbs and heads of their enemies and use those parts of the body as if they were there own. Some patchwork demons go even as far as harvesting the body parts of their enemies and using the parts as their own.

Most notable of patchwork demons is the Devil Goddess Queen Halja (aka. Queen Hel, as she likes to be called).

Imp

Imps are the lowest ranking demons of Helheim. They usually start out as the servants of higher ranking demons and devils. Through many blessings and growth of their souls, they can become more strong and powerful, until they can reach the full apex of godhood.

Djinn

Djinns are the demons of fire and wind. They are the inspiration for genies in Middle Eastern folklore in the human realm. Mortal beings have been known to catch Djinns in bottles and lamp, and make them their servants. The only way a Djinn can be freed from servitude is to ask their master for his/her permission and blessing. Then the Djinn is set free and are sent back to Helheim.

Fallen Deity/Fallen Angel

A Fallen Deity or an Angel is a being that was once a denizen of Godheim. But if that god or angel ends up doing things that are sinful and immoral in their region of Godheim, they are banished to Helheim as their punishments, thus, have fallen from grace and become tainted with darkness.

The most famous of fallen deities are King Scratch (aka King Heylel) and Aqua Elmbarn.

Shade

A shade is a formless shadow being that can take on any form its heart desires. They are commonly sighted in the regions of Sheol, Hades, Tartarus and Nav.

Mononoke

Mononoke are demons that were wronged by mortals and seek revenge on that certain mortal who betrayed that creature. The only way to tame them is to deliver the soul of a wicked person and take his/her blood and life force, thus fusing the soul of the cruel creature with the soul of a mononoke. Once tamed, a Mononoke is a force to be reckoned with, as long as you get on the demon's good side. If not, you'll be very, very sorry.

Regions of Helheim:

Niflheim

Niflheim is the region that is in the northern most region of Helheim. Niflheim is called the region of Mist in the Germanic languages in the human realm. It is ruled over by Queen Halja/Hel, King Bullar, and their seven prince sons.

Since Balder and Nana were taken to Niflheim after death, they helped out with healing the wounded Bullar and Halja, as well as nursing the couple back to health during Ragnarok. This helped Balder and Nana win the favors of Niflheim's royal family, and ever since Balder and Nana are the new rulers of Walhalla kingdom. Things got even better when the Samjok-o Valkyrie named Mist Elmbarn got reunited with Prince Amirani, and were happily married for centuries.

For the first time ever, the Niflheim region and the Asgard and Vanaheim regions became friends and aided each other in times of need.

Nastrand

Nastrand is a frigid island just north of Niflheim. On this Island, is a prison where oath breakers, murderers, muggers, rapists and pedophiles are sent. It got the nickname “Corpse Island” from the mortal souls that were sent there.

For this prison, those criminals sent there cannot escape. The dragon demon known as Nidhogg patrols the area and guards the area zealously. There, the criminal souls were devoured by Nidhogg and his brood, thus becoming one with the dragon demons.

Hades

The region of Hades is located on a landmass southwest of Sheol. It is ruled by King Eita and Queen Ferspnai.

Ferpsnai is actually the daughter of Horta a of the Novensile Kingdom . The god Pluto was smitten with her, but knew that love between Angel gods and Devil gods was forbidden, so he telepathically reveals himself to be Ferpsnai's secret admirer, and lured her into the flower fields of Morpheus, where she fell fast a sleep in the flowers. Eita now claim her and whisked her away to Hades. As she awoken, Eita reveals himself to be Ferpsnai's secret admirer and that the reason why he whisked her away to Hades is that he felt sorry for the goddess living a sheltered life under the thumb of an overprotective mother goddess. Ferpsnai was leery at first, but after a while, she learned to trust Eita and that the devil god meant no harm to her.

The Novensilian gods were very unhappy with Ferpsnai and Eita secretly bonding with each other. They told them about how relationships between holy being and beings of darkness being taboo and forbidden, but at the same time, Eita did not want to start a war. Instead, he made a deal with the Angel gods

Since Ferpsnai ate the food of Helheim, she would spend Spring and Summer in Godheim, while she had to leave and return to Helheim during Autumn and Winter.

The gods made the deal, and there, was a new beginning for the king and queen of Hades.

Orcus

The foreboding region of Orcus is a hook shaped peninsula laying on the southwestern part of Hades. This region is swimming with dreaded monsters and abominable beasts that prey on mortal souls that stumble into the area. The Devil God Charun runs this region, and alongside his sister Culsu, they show the wicked no mercy.

Orcus is an ideal region to send the most cruel and foul of mortal souls who've done heinous crimes against their clan or species. At best, the souls were either devoured by either Charun, Culsu, or their loyal. At worst, they are enslaved and imprisoned, with death being their only blessing.

Famous corrupt mortals imprisoned in Tartarus include the twin sons of Aloeus, King Tantalos and the ogre Tityos.

Yomi

The land of Yomi is a dark and frigid archipelago located in the far east off the land of Diyu. Though it may seem dark and unsettling, Yomi is actually a calm and peaceful place, similar to Niflheim.

The ruler of this group of islands is Queen Izanami, the ex-wife of Izanagi, the former leader of Takama Ga Hara. From the neck down, Izanami has quite an attractive figure, the figure of a shapely female athlete or dancer. However, he face is anything but attractive. She has the face of a ghoulish hag that she hides behind either a veil or ninja mask. Despite her menacing looks, Izanami is actually a rather calm, cool and collected Devil Goddess.

But like any other place in Helheim, always be on your good behavior or you will get punished, and Izanami, like every other Devil God, isn't afraid to punish corrupt and disobedient souls.

Duat

Duat is a vast region far south of Hades and Tartarus. It is home to many strange and unusual supernatural beings of darkness.

The ruler of Duat is Anubis, and it is up to him to judge the souls that recently died. He puts the mortal souls through a few trials. If successful, they would either be his loyal subjects, or better yet, become denizens of Aaru in Godheim. If they fail the trials, they are sacrificed to the demoness Ammit. At best, the souls are devoured by Ammit and they are forced to restart from the beginning. At worst, they will become the demoness' personal slaves.

Despite the rumors, Anubis is an actually decent fellow, who guards over his loyal subjects and help them get back on their feet in the after life. He is not a grim reaper figure like people want you to believe. He's actually a decent fellow once you get to know him well.

Sheol

On a peninsula attached to Niflheim, lies the region of Sheol. It is ruled by a fallen deity named King Scratch. King Scratch was formerly known as King Heylel, who once was the ruler of The Celestial Kingdom in Godheim, and the king of Angelic beings. Then, a war broke out between Yurva and Heylel. Heylel was displeased with Yurva wanting dominion over mortal beings, and wanting to rule over The Celestial Kingdom unopposed.

After the war, King Heylel was banished to Helhelm and was sent to Sheol to fend for himself. There, are group of demons took pity on the fallen god, and gave him a home of his own. There, he changed his identity to King Scratch, and became the new ruler of Sheol after the former ruler was slayed by the forces of Yurva eons ago.

One day, while rounding up corrupt souls, he heard the sound of a baby crying in the bushes near by the Lethe river. There, he found an overturned basket and retrieved an albino baby patchwork devil. He named the girl Halja (Hel is her nickname), and raised her as if she was his own daughter. He sewed up her limbs, making her stay together better, and there, Scratch and Halja both began their life a new in Helheim.

Nav

Nav is a region located to the west of Diyu, with a huge mountain range separating the two.

The region of Nav is a paradise for black magic users, especially those of the Devil Shaman classes and Necromancer classes. Black magicians have been known to put themselves in trances and go on an astral travel to Nav on their journey to learn magic. The rulers of this black magic kingdom are King Tuoni and Queen Tuonetta.

However, living black magicians are forebidden to come to Nav alive. If they do, they shall be cursed, and that curse shall follow them into death. So it's best for a black magic user to wait for his/ her time to come, or to travel in astral form.

Diyu

Diyu is a vast eastern region that neighbors the region of Nav.

There are ten courts in the region of Diyu, with each having a different ruler. However, the grand high ruler of Diyu is known as King Yama.

If you were decent, yet weak willed and/or cowardly, you will be sent to live in one of the ten main courts and live under the protection of the Devil gods within those courts. If you were a cruel or lecherous soul, you were banished to the immense tower of dread centered in the middle of Diyu.

In the tower of dread, there are eighteen floors and tiers. In those floors, are corrupt souls imprisoned from within, each carrying out a punishment that fits their sin and cruelty. For example, On the second floor, greedy, mean spirited thieves and muggers are boiled in either pots of molten gold or molten platinum, depending on the degree of how greedy and mean spirited they are. On the seventeenth floor, people who entertained themselves with torturing and killing animals for their sick amusement are gored, mauled, eaten, bitten, stung or poisoned by various animals that become vengeful.

So whatever you do, be on your best behavior in Diyu, or, you will be banished to the tower of dread, and face fates worse than death.

Who ends up in Helheim?

When you think of Helheim, you think only wicked people end up there, right?

Well, no, not always. Not everyone in Helheim is evil. A lot of souls that end up there are those of weak-willed, cowardly and often times misguided people who often choose to be co-dependent and high maintenance to others instead of making the attempt to help themselves and others around them.

However, despite it's reputation as a vision of hell, Helheim isn't a completely horrible place to be. Evil souls who redeemed themselves and souls of the weak minded tend to fare better in Helheim than those who are wicked and rebellious. The devil gods only punish the souls who are truly evil and out of control. For everyone else that that isn't pure evil, it's actually just as decent place as most of Esageard.

But for those who are wicked, Helheim lives up to its name. For the wicked, they have two choices: repent, or die a horrible death. Souls that refuse to redeem themselves, or rebel against the authorities of Helheim, won't even get a chance to make it out of Helheim alive.

So behave yourself or face the wraith of all the demons and devils within the dark lair.
