The image for something military like this I think can be blamed on the fact that I'd been reading some of the 'Halo' novels at the time.

I later decided that these guys are members of the Argothae Provisional Armed Forces, members of another one of my original species. The unseen enemy they're fighting against are the Veros, who tried to invade their world after conquering Tavros. The Veros did not realise that despite their choice of a simple lifestyle, the Argothae were quite technologically advanced. Several thousand Argothae were initially captured as slaves, but once they reindustrialized and formed a military infrastructure they pushed back hard, liberating the Tavi on the way before ultimately fighting the Veros Star Empire to an uncertain stalemate.
