The vials are filled with a red liquid (combination of reddish dish soap and red food coloring), with the corks wax sealed before the 'ammo' was loaded into the cylinder.

Seriously, this thing is freaking cool.

Thanks :) This was my second attempt at a steampunk prop weapon. The first was a fairly simplistic sawed-off shotgun made out of wood and pvc with a couple brass bits attached. For this one, most of the brass bits were from the plumbing department at Home Depot (with some modifications made); the knife switch and wire were from Lowe's; and I made the various gauges on the hinge and the one side. The batteries for the in-cylinder light are stored in the barrel. Right now the gun's partially disassembled as the battery connection was a little loose.

Only the second attempt? Damn, nice.

I'm a perfectionist who tends to over-research things. ;) In my mind, I should (tho likely won't) tear it apart at some point to use as templates to rough out a much better version. I'll post a close-up of some of the custom gauges in a bit, they were made using instructions from Brute Force Studios' "Steampunk Gear, Gadgets, and Gizmos" ( http://www.bruteforceleather.com/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=437 ). May post a photo of the first attempt as well, not sure yet.
