there is a trend on twitter to post an example of art you did in 2009 compared to art you've done in 2019, to show how you've grown over the decade. i wanted to participate not just by posting two unrelated pieces of art, but by redrawing something from 2009. i settled on this picture of Morrie and Tanner, two OCs who i have long neglected, but who were once very important to me. if you remember them, you've probably been my friend for a long time and i'm grateful for that! i also decided to update their designs, to reflect how my feelings on them have changed and to better demonstrate their characters. in my head this is how they look a few years after the original picture. if i ever use them in anything again it'd be with some variant of these updated designs.

the general gist of both characters is that they have suffered much in their lives and are haunted by their pasts. Morrie still struggles with what happened and what he's done, and wanders aimlessly, still stuck in the past. Tanner is still deeply hurt by what has happened, but over time has found the courage and resolve to push forward towards tomorrow. this picture demonstrates their attitudes... that's why Morrie looks more or less the same as before, while Tanner looks different.

Tanner is a trans girl now. this might be surprising to people who've known these characters for a long time, but it's a decision that felt right to me as i reevaluated them, and also helps to demonstrate the ways tanner has moved forward when Morrie has not. i hope that doesn't bother anyone.
