Restoration: embossed knife

Dark Hestur

This was another thing that belonged to my grandpa (it's been less than 3 months since he passed away and we're still finding things like this).

Again, it was an overall pile of rust, and the leather sheat wasn't in the best of conditions neither.

This one was a tricky job, since I started my sandpaper routine, with the grain 60. To my dismay, I found that on one side of the blade there was an embossed design, of some trees and vegetation and deers, and one thing I knew: f I polished it normally, I'd destroy the design.

Luckily, I knew a friend that had more experience than myself on this things and he recommended a paste made of sodium bicarbonate. I left it for an hour or so and then scrubbed it with a kitchen sponge. Then I did the normal polishing of the rest of the blade, without touching the design on it.

After the blade was done, I repeated the whole process on the aluminum sections of the hilt, giving it a matte finish with a kitchen sponge and WD40.

For the leather sheat, a bit of neatfoot's oil did the trick.
