Restoration: Langsaex by Dark Hestur

Restoration: Langsaex

Dark Hestur

When I got the cuteaux shown here https://www.weasyl.com/submission/858959/restoration-cuteaux I also got a bare blade for a cuteaux that belonged to my grandfather (the restored one was from my great grandfather).

Now, what to do with a bare blade? I decided to re-purpose it, and since it was 35cm long (not counting the tang) perhaps a langsaex was a good option.

The first thing was to straighten the tang; since according to the original hilt it had a stretched S shape. With some bronze I made the guard and "pommel" (it's not actually a pommel, but let's use that nomenclature) and a wooden core covered in 2mm thick leather for the grip.

The blade and bronze parts where then polished by hand using sandpapers of the grains 60, 100, 180, 240 and 600, and the leather was treated with molten beeswax.

For the sheat I wanted something simple, it's made of a folded piece of 2mm thick leather, with 2 small straps so it can be hung on a belt. The whole thing was treated with neatfoot's oil.
