Through the Leaves (critique requested)

Chromamancer

Alternate title: Butterfly Snoot Boop Blep
This started as a quick painting exercise, since I want to improve my rendering and basic technique. The sketch had a lot of potential for interesting lighting, so I figured it would be a nice practice piece.
It was fun to make something a little smaller in scale than my last few pieces, and I really enjoyed working with the color scheme, like usual. ;)

Thank you to Kazzyboii and Neotheta, for some tips while I was working on it, too. :)

Yeah, it does look like it was fun to draw. ^^

      Thanks. :)
That little bit of tongue added a lot to the expression.

The horns look great, they're textured organically. It looks like you put a lot of thought into the scales, they look like they have slight crocodile inspirations, and are wonderful. Did you refernce the butterfly? It looks pretty accurate to a monarch, but purple. The whole piece has a lot of personality, even the leaves about the dragons head. Good job!

Right on all counts. I was looking at some crocodile scale patterns, instead of just winging the scales, like I usually do. I tried to fit them to the shape of the dragon a bit better, and I think it worked out well. I did reference the butterfly from a Monarch, as well. I live in a place where they used t migrate by, so they're a rather iconic type of butterfly, in my mind.

Looking up some of those reference images for crocodile scales, and the butterfly was one of my experiments, when making this piece, and I think that helped give this a bit more of a realistic concrete feel than just drawing from memory and imagination.

Apparently I have a greater eye for observation than I thought! And I think monarchs are pretty iconic in general, they're what I've seen most people use when they depict a butterfly. The only butterflies that come around where I live are the white ones and yellow ones with spots. I'm glad your experiments turned out well, it's awesome when that happens!
