Stalking by Cerih

Stalking

Cerih

This is the last of the A3 drawings I've done recently and by far my favourite. Charha helped me out with the awful scan and tried to eliminate some of the stripiness by adding more contrast. As a result, this looks much better than the other drawings I've submitted, although it is much darker than the original drawing. Black paper in real life is never quite that black. Again I added pale yellow to the eyes to make them really stand out.

Anyway, I simply love this!

Original is for sale, note me if you're interested.

Art by me.

Woaw this is amazing. It`s really impressing how well you use those few simple colors to make such a great artwork!

Thanks! I'm finding it an exciting if somewhat terrifying leap forward. Next leap is to start using more striking colours. ^_^ With the monochrome drawings I've been doing recently, it's as if I've found a piece of myself I didn't know was missing. It's hard to describe. *wistful smile*

It`s awesome that it helps you in that way. =D May I ask which label of pencils you are using for your work ? =)

In general I use a mixture of Derwent's watercolour pencils and Faber Castell's watercolour pencils. These monochrome drawings are done on Faber Castell's Cool Grey I. I also have some Derwent's Inktense pencils, their metallic watercolour pencils and a set of their Graphitints, which I use sporadically. Really I buy far too many pencils and end up only using my well established favourites. I started off with a set of Derwent's watercolour pencils years ago at the recommendation of a good friend and haven't really looked back since. I have their set of 72 pencils, which is the biggest they do as far as I know, and only started buying the Faber Castell pencils because I wanted to supplement some of the colours, the greys in particular. The Derwent set only has 4 shades of grey, whereas now I have 13 at my disposal! ^_^ Phew, a lot of talk about pencils. If you haven't guessed yet, I love talking about art supplies. ^_^

=) That`s cool, because I find it really interesting to talk about art supplies as well. xD I have never heard of that label "Derwent", it seems in Austria it`s not all that easy to get. Although they seem very well crafted. What would you say, are they better than the Faber Castell ones? I usuallly only use Farber Castell, because I don`t really know which label you can trust to be what it claims to be. I just bought myself their pastel pencils because I always wanted to try that out. ^^

Derwents seemed very prominent in Finland, where I was still living when I got my first proper set of pencils. Faber Castells were around as well, but there was no way I could ever afford the enormous set of FC pencils that was on offer. It was stunning, though, and came in a beautiful wooden box. Hmm, perhaps I ought to try to find one now... Anyway, I digress. In general, I find Derwent pencils to be very high quality. I do encounter an occasional problem whereby the "core" of colour in the pencil has something hard mixed in with it, which scratches the paper and produces next to no colour. The only way to try to fix it is to use the pencil sharpener to get rid of the hard bit. With some colours it works well, with others not at all. I've found the same problem to a lesser extent with my Faber Castell pencils, although in all fairness I use a much smaller number of Faber Castell pencils compared to my Derwent ones, so perhaps the comparison isn't quite right. In general, though, if you encounter Derwent pencils that you fancy getting, I think you would enjoy using them. Plus, their colours are excellent. Oh, that reminds me, In a straight comparison, I think Derwent's ivory black and chinese white are better than the Faber Castell's black and white pencils. The colours seem somehow purer with the Derwent pencils.

Okay, I'm going to stop raving about pencils now and go to sleep. ^_^

=) I looked it up on amazon, so I found out that I unfortunately can't afford the sets that I wished to have at the moment. Which is on the one hand Farber Castells watercolour pens set of 120 ..which is about 120€ as well ( I currently own the set of 36 which is not all that much..)..and what I'm personally also really interested in is the Derwent inktense set of 72. I have never heard of such pencils..the description says that they have the appearance of ink if you blend them, which sounds really interesting. I like to try out new things, to see whether I've the aptitude for it. They seem to be of really high quality as well, which is important for me at that level of price. Have you ever heard of that kind ?

                • Link

Yeah, I have a set of 24 Inktense pencils. When I bought them, I didn't realise they did bigger sets of the pencils, otherwise I probably would have bought the 72 pencil set. But when I eventually found out, I figured that I wasn't really using them enough to justify duplication. I've used them to some extent in my black paper work, but I haven't made a full use of the inked appearance feature in painting. One of these days... I'm very tempted by the Faber Castell 120 set now that you pointed it out, but again I don't think I can justify spending £100+ on set of pencils when in most of my work I use a limited range of colours. For instance, reds and yellows don't really feature much in my drawings. As a result, it's better for me to buy individual colours I want to supplement my Derwent collection, rather than getting a full set of pencils. If, however, Derwent did an extended range of 120 pencils, I probably would buy that, just because I like my Derwent pencils so much. I think my logic rather fails somewhere along the lines... O_o

You should keep asking your friend to edit them up, because you can see better the drawing than with your other pictures (No offense to your scanner). If people see this clearly they'll like it better.

Also they look better with the background completly black, like my drawings look better without the texture of the paper.

Unless your drawings are actual slighly visible white markings on a black paper...

I think I'll do one better and learn how to do that sort of editing myself. Fortunately I'll see my friend soon, so I'll be able to bribe her to show me how it's done. :)

It's not that hard. Good luck with it!

I know what you mean. I can`t justify spending that much money on pencils either. I`m mostly using my watercolour pencil set of 36..I`d like to buy at least some single pencils to expand for example my shades of brown and grey, but the only pencils I get even in exclusive artist shops are the ones I own because they only sell the colours that are already in my set. . .

That`s the bad thing if you live in a country like mine. If you specialize in an area it`s really hard to stock up on something that is not for the populace.

Sorry for the comment instead of a reply. o.O Seems I`m not familiar with the site yet. ^^"

      • Link

No worries! I still forget to hit reply in FA and I've been there for years! I'm lucky in being a 20 minute train journey from London, which has some fab art stores. I bought most of my individual Faber Castells from a sale at an art shop I stumbled onto by accident. Serendipity or something. I suppose a trip to London would be a really expensive way of buying pencils... Are there any places online that sells FC pencils individually? Amazon UK looked really expensive, but there are bound to be art websites on the continent as well.

        • Link

Hmm you are right, I`ve never really considered buying single pencils over the internet... At amazon I can only find the ones they also sell at the stores. ^^ But I`ve never really heard of that kind of art site. Maybe in germany there could surely be some, but the problem with private sites are always the shipping costs which tend to be enormous. I gotta look that up^^

          • Link

Alas I can't really recommend any sites on the continent, and I can't imagine shipping from UK to Austria would be that cheap. I hope you'll be able to find somewhere, though!

            • Link

Yes, it is usually between 5 aand 10 euros...so not THAT much, but it`s still money for nothng..

              • Link

                Agreed.
