Did that underpainting technique for this one so we ended up with a little more line-work and a bit darker value wise. I am still unsure about this technique but I do like how this one turned out. probably because I love snakes so he looks real cute <3
I have a final request after this guy, but I will probably sneak in a badge I adopted from the Conbadge Exchange sometime before that. I really dislike when people get jilted in these so I hope a slightly delayed request will be fine.
Thanks for the request!
The underpainting i used is basically you paint out the whole image with just your values (greyscale) then change that layer to multiply; add the base colours in a layer underneath and that gives you a solid base to start working right overtop of it with your standard painting technique. I have been experimenting a lot with how I start my images and so far have gotten rid of sketches all together. I just block out everything in a thumbnail :3 Where i start with values (this one) or go right into colours is the only difference.
The rest is just detail, detail, detail x however far you want to take it :D
hmmm!!!
thanks for the long descrip, out of curiosity-- if you happen to use photoshop, have you played with gradient maps at all?
!!! i wish i had a tutorial onhand because they /completely/ changed the way i do 'glazes'-- they're essentially an overlay that takes all the dark/light values under it, and 'maps' them to a given gradient. like turning all the darks into deep oranges and the lights into purples. saves a lot of time painting because then i don't have to go in and 'paint in' saturation and life where multiply mode sucked it away, i can just key it into the gradient
sorry about the sidetrack, i really love new painting/speed painting techniques if it wasnt obv and wanted to share :D
im still ogling at how much sparkle you painted into this!
That does sound handy, Thank you, I'll have to fool around with them :3 I tend not to care about having to rework areas since I enjoy the whole process so much- but i'm really sure commission folks would be happy if i found someways to speed it up without losing that oomph! I am a bit of a slow n' steady sort- you sorta lose track of time if i'm not running a timer or on a deadline.
What a beautiful piece. Your use of colours and texture is amazing, especially inside the hood of the cobra. Great job.
