aka "Look But Don't Touch" (though I wouldn't really recommend looking too closely either!)

Ariella's background is something of a mystery to those that know her, she makes it perfectly clear that it is a subject she doesn't want to talk about...with good reason. Many people have stories from the time of The Change, when for reasons unclear what is commonly referred to as magic came back into the world and the confusion and chaos that ensued.

For Ariella that event was more of disaster than for most, an Israeli citizen she was visiting distant relatives in Romania at the time. Needless to say she had not made herself popular, the only child of relatively elderly and wealthy parents she had been raised in a priveliged and cosseted environment, with the best of everything. Spoiled, petulant, arrogant and vain she made it perfectly clear that she was only visiting her rather less well off Romanian relatives as it was her parents wish that she did so.

She recalls little about The Change itself, she only remembers feeling distinctly strange before waking up in a rather run down and dilapated wing of a Romanian state hospital several months later in a new body, a new gender and a new world. Mainly due to mass differences most male to female human to Kitsune changees did not survive but Ariella had always been of small build and slim stature but nevertheless it was a terrible strain on her body and for some time she was not expected to pull through. Her relatives visited at first but this gradually tailed off the longer she spent unresponsive and in a coma until none came at all.

A not uncaring but overstretched and underresourced hospital staff were unsure what to do with her beyond basic medical care, and her insistent demands for information in her strange language and voice did not help matters. Eventually when her strength had recovered sufficiently she checked herself out and went to her relatives house who would have been less shocked if a ghost had turned up at the door, having it been made perfectly clear that she was not welcome she was simply told to, 'Go home'. To be fair this was not only a result of Ariella's prior poor attitude but that non-humans and those associating with them had and were being targetted by some less than tolerant aspects of society.

Although still weak and tired, with the instinctive wanderlust of her kind she did as she was told, simply walking from Romania to Israel passing through some terribly dangerous and unfriendly places on the way.

On finally returning home she discovered that her parents and immediate family had died during the chaos after The Change, which was particularly tumultous in the Middle East. The son and heir having apparently vanished the remaining assests of her parents had been broken up and sold off including to some former neighbours and acquaintances. Despite her protestations it was in nobodys interests to admit that she really was who she claimed to be and easy to deny that this thin and bedraggled creature before them was the same arrogant and self-assured young man they knew from before.

Penniless, jobless and alone she turned to the one organisation that would accept her without asking too many questions, the military. Although having previously experienced national service, albiet in a cushy and priviliged position, from considering it an irritating and temporary necessity this time it is a much needed lifeline and to her own surprise she begins to enjoy military life, although it later becomes very much a means to an end.

At the back of her mind is the constant niggling reminder of how she was wronged by both people and fate and she fully intends to get back what was once hers and which she considers only her right, those who have crossed her will learn to their cost the truth of the saying 'beware the fury of the patient man.'

Or Kitsune.

***another awesome commission from richtergrostenmeier and dieselwiesel on FA, they captured Ariella's personality perfectly and I just love how they draw uniforms! Go and check them out! :)
