Dragons on Deck

Bellumsaur

I had wanted to focus on some of the characters I had already established for APW (most of them currently only exist in my writings, that I have yet to upload here). In this case, probably my first APW OC: Dargaliesz Gundamircz; to summarize, he's a Pomeranian sea dragon who serves in the Kaiserliche Marine (the Imperial German Navy) who has had a long, illustrious career spanning two world wars. Here, he is depicted accompanied by a fire drake, Seekadett Vrskel von Burstelfingen, on the deck of the cruiser Konigsberg during World War One.

Von Burstelfingen hails from an ancient noble family in Prussian Hanover, the youngest of four dragonets who took to the sea to find her own fortune there. She has a personal distaste for the British, exasperated by her experiences during the Great War, and is a close friend of Dargaliesz's. The elder Leutnant aids the cadet whenever he can, and she eventually develops feelings for the sea dragon, who doesn't reciprocate them. During the Battle of Rufiji Delta, when the Konigsberg was sunk, Vrskel was among those crewsaurs who swam to shore and headed inland, joining General von Lettow-Vorbeck's guerrilla army fighting against the numerically-superior Entente forces; Dargaliesz was one of a number of crew plucked from the sea by Polish-Lithuanian cruisers who quickly arrive on the scene, and drive off the British warships. Von Burstelfingen would be taken prisoner during a battle in 1916 and held in captivity for the duration of the war, while Dargaliesz returned to Germany and was reassigned to the battleship Bayern.

After the war, the two dragons would reunite in a Wilhelmshaven cafe in 1920; Vrskel was dismayed to learn that Dargaliesz was engaged to another dragoness, Frigiszka Zapiefnik. Vrskel would herself marry an American businessaur living in Hamburg five years later, though they wouldn't have the happiest of marriages.
