The Royal Egg

Bellumsaur

Inspired by the Varna Dragons statue, this was something that took me a bit to draw and color, not just because of the scales on the dragons and the egg but also the background. I wanted to make a more dynamic background than I usually either draw a simple, colorless BG or just leave it blank since I don't feel like trying to do extra work on drawings that may already be time-consuming for me to brainstorm and create anyway; however, I decided to try something different, in the form of using darker shades to contrast between the sunlight on the balcony and the interior of the palace structure.

In much of Europe, traditionally the relations between the Saurian/Non-Saurian states and the draconic ones had never been the most cordial and the spread of Christianity, which in most circles at the time, held Dragons as being servants of Satan, only exasperated that. However, in the Balkans, things were different; the Saurians and Non-Saurians of the region held the local Dragons in high regard, to the point that there were cases of intermixing between Saurian and Draconic royal houses in Bulgaria, Hungary, and the Balkan kingdoms. A number of local heroes were either Dragons themselves or of mixed Draconic blood and these tales were often spread to instill fear into their enemies (whether they be the Austrians, Turks, or Byzantines).

Here, we see a Draaj (Bulgarian Dragon) couple with their newly-laid egg (single eggs were rare, three or four eggs in one clutch being more common), the female gesturing toward her husband that she wants to hold it before taking it back to the royal hatchery.
