I Accidentally 3D Modelling (critique requested)

ArmedDillo

And then I accidentally a character.
This took three days to make, aaaah! It barely felt like that much time 'cause I was having a lot of fun with Blender. I've been learning it for the past month or two, and I think I'm not too bad at it!

He's (it's*?) a travelling scholar, and a professional cutie (at least to me). I'll most likely be reusing him (it*?) once I've figured out how bones and rigging work.

Yo, I love that book and those straps. That's super creative! Once you get more comfortable with modeling and get really good at texturing, you might want to consider learning how to make Unity assets to sell on their asset store. It's not a huge influx in income, but it can certainly beat earning nothing! Lots of games are looking for stylized npcs and mobs now days.
If I were to offer any critique, it would be to learn how to texture and use bump maps next! There are tons of tutorials for both on youtube, but if you prefer reading over listening to a video, there are lots of good posts in the blender forums too.

Heheh, I'm still very much learning the ropes as far as 3D's concerned, but thanks for the kind words! I gotta say, the strap for the book was my favourite part too. <:P
I'll focus on "finishing" this model first by reducing its poly count and rigging it, so that way I have some hands-on experience with every "essential" step of creating models.
I might focus some more on texturing for the next one!

Bump mapping's super neat; I don't know if I'm up to learning it yet, but it'll definitely be something I'll pick up somewhere down the line.

I wasn't thinking much about selling assets, but now that you mention it, that'd be something I'll wanna keep in mind. I wouldn't be selling this guy, though; his model's incredibly inefficient and has way too many polys! It's gonna lag all the games. xux

Blender has a really neat way of helping you make bump maps from normal maps, and even lets you bake normal maps super easy from a high poly version of the model onto a lower poly version of the model. So no making normal maps and bump maps by hand! Yay! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrN5jgA8ia8
This guy also has a lot of super neat tutorials and I seem to find myself linking to his videos a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2-FfB9kRmE

As far as selling assets goes, I totally understand if you wouldn't want to part with any early model. I have a ton of models I've made where I was trying to teach myself something new I learned that would never sell. XD
It's always an option though, for sure, and one that lots of beginning modelers don't know about, so I felt I should mention it. :P
