St Patrick's Patrington (1) by Aremay

St Patrick's Patrington (1)

Aremay

St Patrick's Patrington was ranked as one of the best churches in England by Simon Jenkins in his book on England's Thousand Best Churches; it's an opinion that I have come to share. A graceful essay in the Decorated style of English Gothic, Patrington's creator and designer are lost to history, but their creation lives on, a stunning find in the midst of the Holderness countryside.

I took this one on a trip to the church in February of this year; it was bitterly cold with snow on the ground outside, inside the air was just as bitingly cold. I don't know why, but it seemed to make the place even more beautiful than on previous summer trips. This is a view down the nave from the West end, taken from just in front of the font. One can see the beautiful carving and moulding on the columns, capitals and arches, and some of the incredibly vibrant figurative and foliage carving that populates this church.

Those huge columns in the crossing are very pretty. So massive, yet they still look very graceful as well :)
