Imbolc by anjel

Imbolc

anjel

This is the first in my series of sabbot cards. I am doing a card for each of the 8 sabbaths of the Wiccan Calendar, and I plan on drawing a diversity of different kinds of people for each of the 8 celebrations.

The first one is Imbolc, which is Feb 1, also known as St. Bridget's day and Candlemas. Imbolc is a time for feasting and fellowship to survive the last cold days in the winter, and await the rebirth of Oastra, the spring Equinox. On this day, it is tradition to serve dishes with milk and cheese, as these are food stuffs that preserved over winter, and contain much needed fat and protein needed for a people to survive during the last few weeks before spring.

Candles also represent the return to light and warm fires to help inspire imaginations of people who were still confined to mostly in doors activities. The candle crown is a tradition I borrowed from Norway and Sweden, where young women would dance with candles in their hands and crowns surrounding the celebration.

Next up is Oastara.
