COMM - Raiko Reference Sheet by Akysi

COMM - Raiko Reference Sheet

Akysi

This was a carryover from last year so it’s now my first art of this year, another commission for VioletStrike214 on Twitter of her character Raiko! The devil was in the details on this one but it’s finally complete, and some of my best perspective work in a while. Easily one of the coolest designs I’ve ever been given to make a reference sheet for, thank you for commissioning me! <3

Wowzers, "the details" is right! You've really put your all into this one.
Armor in general is Haarrrrd to draw and make look right, or even "not flat". You did extremely well for this one, but there are some places that it still looks a liiiittle flat (namely in the torso piece). Again, armor is haaaaaaarrrrrdddd, and I remember 20 years ago trying to teach another artist how to do this through words ^^; That didn't go very well, but I think it was good practice.

Aside from that, everything else is phenomenal! Your use of colors is always amazing, and that shimmer you put on the weapons makes them look soooo much better! I absolutely love your "particle/magic effects", they're always a treat to see because you seem to have free reign on how to make them look. I've never seen Lightning or Fire effects look that great!

The only thing about commissioned ref sheets and why I have a hard time commenting on them is that I can rarely tell who's idea is whose. What details were requested and which are yours flexing those creative muscles x3 Regardless, superb job on this one~ That's quite the firework to launch into the new year!

Thank you! ^_^ And yeah the perspective on certain parts really made my brain melt at times, especially with attempting to rotate pieces that are flat but are being viewed at an angle, especially the torso, shoulder pieces, and the swords. I could tell that my skills could not do some parts of it with full confidence, so it's a good reminder that I need to practice more! I certainly levelled up after this at least, and my years of practice with drawing copious amounts of dragon scales is probably the reason I was able to pull off that layering effect on the lower half there. While I love drawing armour of any kind, it's never easy haha

I appreciate the love for the effects too, I had fun with those :'D Even though I almost always do flat colour on these sheets for the sake of the reference, I like adding metal shines in a few areas to not only clarify the differences in material here, but to add that little extra... well, shine! I think it really brings it all together with armour and weapon sets like this. I was given free reign to design the fire/lightning however I wanted, so I'm really happy the commissioner liked them on the first try! :D

And yeah that's totally fair! When it comes to my reference sheet commissions, the amount of design work I do from scratch varies depending on what reference material I am given, usually a series of photos and/or written descriptions for different parts. Sometimes the character does not have a design yet and thus I create one for the sheet, other times the commissioner gives me the design that I then translate into a more expanded reference that clarifies the details/mechanics of the character, and any additions are made during our conversations in the WIP phase.

This was the case here, the original artwork of this character and her armour/mask was done by a friend of the commissioner in a traditional coloured pencil style, and I was commissioned to translate it into a full digital design sheet and filled in any necessary gaps to make sure it all worked together. Her swords, tanto and their sheathes were already designed, but her kunai, revolver and their holsters were designed by me, and I of course translated all of the palettes into digital colours. No matter the amount of design work I do for these though, it will always be a collaborative effort that I'm happy to be a part of :)
