Captain Apollo Ref by Akysi

Captain Apollo Ref

Akysi

Happy October everybody! :D While I’ve had this character in the works for months and thus didn’t plan his colour palette to match the season, it sort of worked out that way anyway huh? Can’t go wrong with orange and black!

This is Captain Apollo, aka Eli, the sun to Captain Artemis’s moon. As such, he’s based on the golden sun moth, though I’ve since discovered that the Apollo butterfly is also a thing, so I’ll definitely make a character out of that one at some point too! Like Artemis, Apollo has a caterpillar companion of his own so stay tuned for that, but hope you like this for now :)

That is a lovely design, and yes, a perfect color pallet for October ^^
I may have said this before, but one of my favorite color combos is Orange and Cyan. And using it here on his eyes really really makes them pop out! He also definitely has a lot of warmth in his design, which is perfect for the Sun theme ^^
Though I will say that the 'black' looks more like a very dark brown, and I feel like that works in his favor. Maybe it's due to the brown lines that you used during those black parts? Regardless, it makes it look fantastic <3

Thank you! ^_^ The timing worked out in my favour this time haha. And I'm happy you noticed that! <3 Unless it's for a specific art style, I very rarely use pure black or pure white on a design when I'm in the colour phase, as tinting those with the design's most prominent colour can help it all harmonize. So in this case, the "black" is indeed a dark brown instead to match with the rest of the warm colours. Same goes for the "white" on his palette too, it's actually a very light yellow! Balancing a colour palette can be hard enough as it is, so it's tricks like these that help make it a little easier.

Oh wow, I didn't even notice the white x3
But that's something I'll keep in mind if someone asks for color advice. It really makes the look stand out much better ^^

Yeah! ^_^ Colour theory can be one of the most complicated parts of character design, so having little tools and tricks like that can really help.
