Sir Callaius by Akysi

Sir Callaius

Akysi

Finally finished some art this month! I’ve had this character for a while but couldn’t really settle on a design for him initially, so it’s nice to finally have a finished look for him. This is Callaius, one of the Irivell’s best knights. He has an air of mystery about him, as he never states his last name and no one has ever seen him without his helmet on. This aroused some suspicion when he was first recruited into the royal guard, but he quickly proved his worth through his speed, strength and fierce loyalty in combat.

Though somewhat robotic in how he carries himself and acts around others, Callaius takes to protecting Snowy rather quickly, albeit in more subtle ways that the Prince isn’t likely to notice. This gets harder to do as the day of Snowy’s trial draws nearer, but Callaius is no stranger to sacrifices.

Mysterious indeed! And quite a dark design, I'm so glad you decided to add in that uncolored version in here. Makes it much easier to recognize the immense detail in that armor, wowzers!
"Full-Black" (colored) characters do well in terms of symbolism, but often just come off as a shadow of sorts I find. They're there to look and make the audience feel uneasy; half using the fear of the unknown to help them with their role, both on screen and in terms of character. However, what really stands out is the iridescence you added in! Gosh that looks beautiful, and brings all that darkness to life without losing almost any of that mystery. Beautiful job on that~

The overall design of the armor is honestly fantastic, and it honestly supports that "robotic" movement idea. But there are two things I did want to point out: the eyeholes of the helmet is a great idea. Not only to make the enemy second guess where to aim but it also leads to the second part: Height. Fear is such a powerful tool in terms of combat or fights in general, and to make Callaius look so imposing up close- almost giant like compared to others- would benefit him immensely. Even though it's maybe a couple of inches of extra height at best, it may just be enough to look like he towers over a soldier when up close.

Great job on this design ^^

Thank you so much for your kind words Bartan! :'D I always appreciate you taking the time to comment with so much insight <3

And yeah fully black/dark coloured designs are quite the challenge, especially in terms of legibility, so that's why I felt the iridescence was a crucial aspect, in addition to looking cool and hearkening back to the bird he's based on. A lot of corvids have iridescent feathers that really let them pop in sunlight! I may tweak a few of the tones later just to make sure everything still reads in different lighting conditions for the comic I have planned for him, but I like the balance I struck with them here at least.

And thanks! ^_^ Having the eye holes in a different place compared to the animal inspiration allows me to keep the placement of the "eyes" on the helmet more accurate to the animal without sacrificing the functionality for the person wearing it, a solution I've needed pretty often for this particular series actually! And that's a good point about his height, I haven't added him to the lineup of characters yet but I'll definitely keep that in mind when I do. His head area and parts of his armour are meant to look longer/taller than normal for misdirection purposes, so an intimidating height makes sense in addition to everything else. A mysterious and imposing presence is what I'm aiming for, so I'm glad that came through here!

        You're very welcome~
I completely forgot that some feathers actually do have the iridescence naturally :x It's been a rough week and this furball's brain is exhausted. But yeah, that is really true and super fitting ^^
