Continuing my series of simple illustrations of side/recurring characters who haven't appeared in my gallery yet. Gustav Attwater here is a detective sergeant for the Andersonian Royal Police Force - the same force as Commander Konrad, though he doesn't usually work directly with him.

In a casual conversation, Attwater can come across as a bit superficial. He will openly admit that the reason he underwent the extra training to become a detective was that he didn't like the uniforms of the patrol officers. But don't let that fool you into thinking he's not serious about his job. Attwater has been involved in solving many of the big-story crimes in recent years, and apparently has turned down several promotions because he'd prefer to be out in the field finding evidence than sitting back ordering others around. Although he does have a small team of lower-ranked detectives under his command, he seems to do the majority of the investigation work himself. He has a particular interest in talking to witnesses and other civilians, and will often spend hours just getting to know somebody even if they are only tangentially related to the case.

Unlike Konrad, Attwater doesn't harbour any specific animosity towards pirates, and is fairly comfortable strolling into pirate hangouts to chat with them, whether to try to find some gossip about a particular crime . . . or just to share fashion tips. After all, pirates are often a good source of both. Attwater's willingness to consort with criminals is sometimes seen as controversial in the eyes of the general public, but the police commissioner seems to trust in his ability to get the job done.
