Niklaus in this picture is about 11yrs old, and yes, is coming back from hunting. I know some of you are scratching their heads about him hunting when he's not even a teen, but you have to remember, at the time, being 11 meant your ass was an ADULT, or atleast close enough. However, his hunting is what helps offset some of the costs of his mothers inn.
