Dragon Wing Study 1 - Bat - First Attempt

Cassander

So I'm thinking of getting into drawing a little bit and decided to start with an exercise from windfalcon's book, Winged Fantasy. This drawing was done with the guidance of the exercise, Drawing a Bat Wing.

To start with, I pretty much attempted to use the same pose as the example in the book though I made the proportions different. The arms are bigger and more muscular, for example, but the fingers are curved in a similar manner.

I started at the bottom of the page in my sketch book which was a mistake because it cramped me in a little bit. I believe I made the wing too short and too narrow. For my next attempt, I'm going to try to really lengthen it out like my own wings more. Especially for that level of muscle on the wing, this is just way too short.

I had no idea what I was doing when shading and really need to improve at that, but it came out better than I expected. I also made the digits too thick I think and will need to narrow those. I have no idea how to do an elbow - my dragon wing apparently has a bit more fat on it than the one in the book as far as the arms are concerned.

Eventually, I'd like to do some pterosaur wings as well with the eventual goal being to attempt to draw myself and try out different wing types and proportions. The book also has exercises and guidance for drawing other parts of dragons and how to put them all together. One step at a time, though.

I also definitely need to get a details eraser. I was using a gum eraser for this and it got pretty frustrating for erasing the details. Didn't end up erasing them thoroughly enough, as you can see, though they're fainter on the page.

Thanks. And that's the plan, but my plans gang aft agley. Eventually I'd like to be able to draw myself and experiment with different anatomies.
