He's Japanese, right? I'm pretty sure that the homosexual community isn't really as openly accepted over there, now that I think about it.

It's... complicated. Most people do keep their sexuality hidden, yes, but there are also known gay hang outs and there's no law AGAINST homosexual activity.

Well the way I understood it is there's the younger generation that doesn't really care what someone's orientation is but then there's that ever present aging community with standards and tradition. I guess that's not really too different from the U.S., a younger generation that's either entirely accepting or generally apathetic to homosexuality with an aging community that disagrees purely because "tradition."
