Blade Under Mask: Anatomy of a common Greatlander

WhiteMantis

Before anything, I’d like to say I’m no anatomy expert, nor do I seek extreme realism. This is just how I envision something in MY world. Also I’m not going in extreme detail.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions! But please refrain from saying the usual ‘INSECTS DON’T HAVE BREASTS’ argument or things like it, as it doesn’t work here. Great Land is a different planet, with unique inhabitants, they have no relation to humans or earth insects.

Here’s the fetal development of a Greatlander, if you want to see: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8714555/

~~

There’s an extreme case of anatomy variation in Great Land, so no individual is equal to the other, why that happens no one knows. I picked the most common anatomy in my world, the ‘insect’ one, to be exemplified.

  • Bones: All Greatlanders have bones in their body. Despite having light bodies, they’re still too heavy to be exclusively by some sort exoskeleton, making the existence of an endoskeleton necessary. The bones of the Greatlanders are made from a semitransparent, crystal-like material. They are way lighter than common bones, but still resistent. Appendages (such as raptorials) and abdomen ribs are made from a similar material, but more flexible, making them able to be bent.

  • Organs: Greatlanders have three lungs. The two inside the thorax are called vocal lungs, and make speech possible. Vocal lungs are connected to a third, bigger, tubular lung, named breathing lung. The breathing lung extends itself almost through all the entire body. Connected to the central tube, there are numerous smaller tubes, which in turn make their way through the muscles and skin, ending in small orifices called spiracles. Oxygen is caught by the spiracles and sent to blood through the breathing lung. [Needs to be revised]
The abdomen contains a sensorial organ connected directly to the brain, it helps them maintain balance and be aware of the surroundings. They hear and smell through their feelers.
Greatlanders have a big heart, a liver, a stomach, intestines, two kidneys. Greatlanders have a specialized bladder, capable of dissolving everything not absorbed by the body into liquid, to be eliminated later through their urethra. Both male and female’s urethras are equal to humans'. With all body waste eliminated through urine, Greatlanders don’t defecate, and don’t have anus.

  • Reproduction: Males have one single internal penis and internal testicles. Females have a special uterus. Their uterus is divided in two connected parts, one behind the other. The first part hosts the fetus in its early stages and as it develops, it's slowy moved to the other side of the uterus, while the first side shrinks until gestation is over. Females also have two different sexual orifices, one behind the other and both connected to one side of the uterus. The foremost is used for insemination during sexual intercourse and the hindmost is through where babies are born.
There are no intersex Greatlanders, only MALE and FEMALE.

  • Flesh: Greatlanders have muscles covering their organs and bones. Their flesh color varies from species to species, but their blood is always red.

  • Skin: Greatlanders can have two or three layers of skin, most though, have only two, like shown here. The inner skin is very soft, fragile and tends to bleed a lot if injured. The outer skin is a bit harder and more resistent, but still soft enough to sink if poked. Outer skin and is divided in plates and also bleeds, but less than inner skin.
The third skin layer that some Greatlanders have are much harder and resistent, and since they do not blood vessels through them, they do not bleed.

  • Wings: Some Greatlanders have wings, but despite having them, they are unable to fly. Their body is far too heavy to be lifted by their wings. Wings are a considered a symbol of the gods, resulting in some kind of prejudice against wingless civilians. Despite the efforts of the authorities to end this prejudice, it's still found among a great portion of the population.

That’s it for now. I’ll post more Blade Under Mask stuff in the future.
