The Treaty of Phoenix Arrow Island by Adventurer

The Treaty of Phoenix Arrow Island

Adventurer

Another piece from my backlog, from April 2015!

Description from original DA submission below:

Here we have Queen Giselle of Illupia, and His Royal Majesty The Eternal King Anderson of the Anderson Kingdom (where they love long pompous titles apparently). Illupia and the Anderson Kingdom are the two "native" kingdoms of the archipelago of Purithym. Up until recently, a major world power, the Argonan Empire, also had a colony in Purithym, and the three nations were involved in a long war known as the Purithyan-Argonan War.

This changed three years ago, when the Argonan emperor and several other key Argonan governmental officials were suddenly assassinated by a pirate calling himself General Larenz. Unable to handle the chaos that followed, the remaining Argonan authorities made the decision to abandon all Purithyan islands under the nation's control and withdraw from the region, basically leaving the native kingdoms to clean up the mess Argona had caused. This led Queen Giselle and King Anderson to start negotiations and draw up the Treaty of Phoenix Arrow Island, which ultimately signalled the end of the war.

The treaty is essentially a peace agreement, also introducing free trade and travel between the two kingdoms, and outlining measures for the two governments to bring stability to those islands abandoned by the Argonan Empire (the ultimate goal being to adopt each of these islands into either Illupia or the Anderson Kingdom, subject to negotiations between the two kingdoms and the island's inhabitants). It also established Phoenix Arrow Island as the first island to be dually owned by both kingdoms, resulting in it becoming the central hub for all inter-kingdom discussion and decision-making.

Soo, this image is supposed to be Queen Giselle and King Anderson after signing the treaty, striking a happy pose together for the public and the press (presumably sketch artists since photography hasn't been invented in their world). I figured this would be something fun to draw because it's such an important moment in recent Purithyan history. Plus it was an excuse to submit a picture featuring the kingdoms' flags, which I designed forever ago but never really found an opportunity to include in a drawing. Bonus fun fact: I did actually slip the Argonan flag into the background of a previous image . . . so all three of the major nations' flags have now been shown. Yay! Flags!

Also, in case you were wondering, King Anderson isn't actually short. He's a bit taller than average, to be honest. It's just that ordacs (Queen Giselle's species) are bigger than humans, so he looks a bit shrimpy in comparison. At least he has that fancy crown to make himself look a little closer to her height.
