From Wikipedia:

'Selling out is a common idiomatic pejorative expression for the compromising of a person's integrity, morality, authenticity, or principles in exchange for personal gain, such as money. [1] In terms of music or art, selling out is associated with attempts to tailor material to a mainstream or commercial audience; for example, a musician who alters his material to encompass a wider audience, and in turn generates greater revenue, may be labeled by fans who pre-date the change as a sellout.'

I've had a few people say this to me now, either directly or heavily implying that I am selling out. I write stories that deliberately hit a larger audience and vary my content so there's something for everyone. I don't like to restrict myself to certain kinks and I love drawing new people in to read my stories. I am aware that certain topics draw a larger audience and I have moved away from domination and submission stories - at least in the instance where they are the sum of my gallery. I don't see why I should only write on one topic when there is so much out there to enjoy and experience. Of course, there are more D/s stories to come - I'd never stop writing about that kink! I just love playing with a wider range.

With my paid stories, available on Kindle, Sellfy etc, I will be utilising topics that are more popular, to the best of my ability. Is this selling out to other people? Is the fact that I am slowly and surely moving towards paid publication selling out? Yes, they will be behind a paywall, technically. Those who support on Patreon will receive these for free, because they are supporting - it's a little extra for them. But everything else will be available for between 0.99 GBP and 5.99 GBP, nothing terrible on my self-publishing side.

I've also had it suggested that doing commissions is selling out. Well, it generates greater revenue than writing for free and I'm saving for a house deposit. Some commission money goes towards holidays and some is going towards cover art for the mentioned paid stories (SO EXCITED!). It's made me curious about general opinion, if we raise the topic.

So, what are your thoughts on this?

Seems to me that the ones who usually complain the loudest about people selling out are usually the ones who want their art (in any form) to be free. 'Starving artist' and all that BS.

From one writer to another, all I have to say is, good luck, Amethyst! :-)

Yes, I'm not sure what starving artists is all about. It struck me as something that people who tried to do it full time before they were ready would have happen to them. But we don't HAVE to struggle. (well, hence my day job!)

And thank you! That is very kind of you! ^^

I view selling out as changing your moral compass for money. That being said you always seemed to be wanting and heading toward publication, or at least since I have know you. I feel those who call other sell outs tend to be the more jealous sort rather then those whom have a legitimate complaint. I say keep working towards your goals continue taking commissions and publicizing your work. :3

Yeah, I suppose it would be so if I turned around and said I was writing vampire teenage fiction for money. If I ever do that, please end me.

      Interesting one to discuss!

I think a book like that would do that for you. That being said on the argument could be made that commissions is a way to broaden your horizons covering topic you might or might not have considered. Besides that commissioners pay a rather larger sum to see their story come to life. All in all if anyone is calling you a sell out I don't see it.

Meh. People complain about selling out.

Me? I find that the people who complain are the people who don't have to worry about if their life is gonna be comfortable or not.

    • Link

I would hesitate a guess that that is correct!

Some say "sold out". I say "made it".
