Laptop Talk... by SaaraBlitz

Okay so I'm gonna need to have a talk with you guys... Mainly to my current/future commissioners...

So one of the hinges on my laptop has been broken (for some stupid dumb fuck reason. I was never rough with it.) for quite some time now, and when I turned on and opened my laptop this morning, the colors on the screen were REALLY acting up... This is exactly what I feared. My laptop screen may be going out... The computer works fine, but I was terrified the screen would stop working correctly because of the broken hinge. (It's a very expensive fix, so that's why I haven't been able to get the hinge fixed yet...)

What does this mean? If the screen on my laptop goes out, there will be no way I can work. I might as well not have a computer at all if the screen stops working... And I REALLY can't afford to buy a new laptop right now.... :(

I just wanted to post this journal, letting you all know in advance that in the event that my laptop's screen stops working, I will need to cease working on all commissions for a while, and I will not open for any more in case it stops working, or if I can't get it fixed in time... I just really don't want to make anyone angry, and I hate delaying my work, but if this happens I'm pretty helpless until I can either afford to fix it, or buy a whole new computer.... It's a really upsetting and stressful situation for me, because my computer is my most important work tool I have (besides my tablet...)

Anyway, I'm hoping you guys understand. For now I can still work, but I'm not sure how much longer it will last...

I really hope you guys understand. If the worst case scenario happens, and it stops working, I will post another journal letting you all know that commissions (and all other work) will be postponed until I find a solution.

Thank you guys...

Do you know if your laptop has a place to connect an external screen? Most have a DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort connector, and I'd imagine an external screen is a whole heck of a lot cheaper than trying to fix or replace the laptop!

Yeah someone else suggested I get another monitor for it and hook it into my laptop, for the time being. If all else fails, I might do that until I can either fix the hinge or buy a new computer (I've been planning on getting a new one at some point anyway, I'm honestly very picky about my electronics and like to have a nice one to work on. XD). I just hate quitting work, even if my computer is acting up. XC Thank you for the suggestion. :)

What's your budget? A nice 21" HD screen ran me about $150, but that's also higher res than most laptop screens so if you're fine with cutting back on that you can probably go cheaper.

Another thing is, chances are it's just a loose connector. If you're not afraid to get messy you could probably take the thing apart and reconnect it yourself. OTOH I'd advise against doing that if you're not 100% confident you can reassemble it since it is your only means of working...

+1 on the loose connector possibility. If you're really lucky it's just one of the ribbon connectors pulled out of its slot a little bit.

Saw it happen pretty frequently when I worked in a computer repair shop in the early 2000s.

Yeah, if it's something like that you might bring it to the repair shop and they'll charge the full price and all the replacement parts when all it needs is to have the connector pushed back in. Why don't you try to take it apart and fix it, and if you fail then you can bring it to the repair shop (or a friend)? They won't have a problem putting it back together, it will even save them time since they didn't have to take it apart.

Often the only reason stuff like that is expensive is because of the labor costs, IE you're paying $20 for the part, and $200 for someone to sit at a table and for a few hours and put it in. Maybe some wiz can find the parts to replace. You could also possibly get a broken laptop and take the parts off of it. Think about the prices:

Things like this are often common problems associated with the model of computer. You may be able to find a youtube video tutorial for your specific laptop. You could even stream it, so you can have help from your tech fans. Or you might be able to get one of them to do it for you. I would consider all these options before you walk into some shop and try to convince some bored guy to fix your computer without charging an arm and a leg.
